According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), India faces about 18000 to 20000 Rabies cases every year. The number of stray animals in India is increasing every year. Helplocal decided to create this post to share the latest statistics of stray animals in India.

In this post, we will help people of India learn about the statistics and data of stray animals.

Animals in India: Stats and Data

  • The number of pet cats in India is estimated to be nearly two million in the year 2018 and the population is forecast to reach approximately 2.5 million by the end of year 2023.
  • Approximately 35 million stray dogs live in India.
  • As per the 20th Livestock Census which was released in 2020, India has over 4.5 million stray cattle.
  •  According to the Indian government, stray animals caused 1604 road accidents in 2016, leading to 629 human deaths.
  • The median number of animals housed in the shelters was 232. The median number of cows, heifers, bulls, bullocks, female and male calves were 137, 48, 12, 9, 11 and 15, respectively.
  • According to the records, 767 dogs, 160 cats and 161 cattle were brought to its hospital and animal shelter from April 2019 to July 2019. Most of these animals were accident victims.
  • As of 2021-22, there are 981 protected areas including 104 National Parks, 566 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 97 Conservation Reserves and 214 Community Reserves. In addition there are 51 Tiger Reserves, 18 Biosphere Reserves and 32 Elephant Reserves.

Red Paws Rescue, New Delhi

Red Paws Rescue NGO in New Delhi was started by Sadhwi Sondhi to create awareness about stray animals. This NGO has made many animal shelters not only in New Delhi as well as in other states too. Their aim is to find a home for every stray dog and pups and to provide better medical care for the animals.
