Pratham NGO , Mumbai

Pratham means First! It is a Mumbai-based non-profit organization that focuses on improving the quality of education for children in slums. Established in 1995 to create career opportunities for children in the slums of the Mumbai region, Pratham has grown in both scope and scale, with programs today reaching millions of children and youth across the country. Working directly with children and youth as well as through large-scale collaborations with government systems, Pratham programs are known to brighten the future of millions of lives every year.

Pratham also offers digital devices like smartphones and computers directly in the hands of children providing them with opportunities and choices to learn on their own. Children do projects and conduct activities (e.g. role plays, playing games) and then present what they have learned either in front of a live audience of parents or on a video. With the same dedication toward improving the education system for slum children Pratham has been working for the last two decades and will continue to work for many upcoming decades.

Founder's vision & message

Dr. Madhav Chavan, Dr. Rukmini Banerji, Dr. Wilima Wadhwa, Farida Lambay are the four pillars of the Pratham Foundation. Their vision of transforming the education system for slum children is the driving force behind this nonprofit organization. Before becoming a part of the Pratham Foundation, Dr. Madhav Chavan has worked in the field of adult literacy from 1989 to 1994 inspired by the National Literacy Mission launched by late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.

Under his guidance, Pratham Foundation has helped millions of children of the weaker sections. With more than 250 volunteers, this nonprofit organization provides educational support in the slum areas of the Mumbai region. Selfless service is what drives volunteers of Pratham Foundation to make India a better place for the underprivileged.
