Types of Violence Against Women
Sexual violence: Sexual violence is an act of abusive sexual contact, forced engagement in sexual acts, attempting sexual acts with a woman without her consent, or verbal abuse. It also includes unwelcome touching, including pinching, patting, rubbing, and repeatedly asking a person for dates asking for sex, and making sexual comments about appearance, clothing, or body parts, among others.
Female genital mutilation: FGM refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is most often carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15.
Domestic violence: Domestic violence involves someone making their partner afraid by abusing them, to control them. It includes physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, financial, technological, social, and spiritual abuse. It has been found since the age of 15, approximately one in four women have experienced violence from partners.
Financial or Economic Violence: Women are considered homemakers whereas men are considered bread earners. It is found that men control the finances and bank accounts, in some sections of society, women are denied work according to their choices.
Female trafficking: Women are one of the most vulnerable groups to human trafficking. For purposes of sexual or commercial exploitation, young women and teenage girls are kidnapped, and sold in nearly every country of the world.
Women trafficking, including the exploitation of females, is a significant issue in India and it takes many forms such as forced labor, sexual exploitation, and domestic servitude.
Online and technologically facilitated violence: Technology-powered violence against women occurs in many forms, including sextortion, which is termed as publishing sexual information, photos, and videos. This also includes blackmail by threatening to publish sexual information, photos, or videos, and, doxing that is publishing private personal information.
Violence against women: Statistics
Women are vulnerable to unlawful and unethical crimes like rapes, mob violence, honor killing, and forced marriages. A report by the World Health Organization stated that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
In India, as per the report of the National Family Health Survey 2015-16, 29.5% of women have experienced physical violence since age 15, and 21.2% have experienced physical violence. Moreover, 26% of even married women have experienced at least one of violence, and 4% of women have experienced physical violence during pregnancy, like honor killings.
According to the annual report of the National Crime Bureau, Delhi registered the highest rate of crimes against women in 2022. Delhi recorded 14,247 cases in 2024 with a rate of 144.4 per lakh. The crime against women in the national capital stood at 14,277 in 2021 and 10,093 in 2020.
The NCRB data revealed that Uttar Pradesh registered 65,743 crime against women FIRs in 2022 followed by Maharashtra at 45,331, Rajasthan at 45,058, West Bengal at 34,738, and Madhya Pradesh at 32,765. These five states together contributed 50.2% (2,23,635 cases) of the total cases lodged in the country in 2022.
The 2019-2020 report by the National Family Survey stated that nearly, 29.3% of married woman between the ages of 18 and 49 have experienced domestic and sexual violence, whereas 3.1% of pregnant woman aged 18 to 49 have suffered physical violence during their pregnancy.

AKS Foundation, Maharashtra
ASK Foundation is a Maharashtra-based nonprofit organization working against gender-based violence and sexual assaults. Since its establishment in 2008 by Barkha Bajaj, the NGO has successfully reached 11,000+ victims in the Maharashtra region, who are physically assaulted and mentally harmed.
On August 16, 2013, the organization launched a 24-hour crisis helpline for victims of abuse, violence, and sexual assault issues, and presently they receive nearly 3000 calls a year on gender abuse and sexual assault-related issues.
