4 Steps of Disaster Management

Natural disasters don’t strike overnight or finish within a day. That’s why pre, ongoing, and post disaster thinking is crucial. Here are 4 things that every disaster management plan should think about:

  1. Prepare
  2. Protect
  3. Respond
  4. Recover

1. Prepare: Preparation is key when it comes to managing a disaster. This involves creating a well-structured plan for managing disasters. Training and awareness campaigns are put in place in order for people to be well aware of their roles and responsibilities when a disaster occurs. Early warning systems and resource management are some of the approaches that can be put in place for Disaster Management.

2. Protect: “Protection” is risk reduction preceding a disaster. This involves making infrastructure and building codes stricter and more enforced. Additionally, land use planning and environmentally conscious behavior are encouraged. The protection of lives and assets and basic infrastructure such as hospitals, electricity supply, and water is a must. Also included are risk reduction and insurance at the community level.

3. Respond: Response is the first action taken when a disaster hits. Response comprises activities such as rescue missions, provision of emergency health care, evacuation activities, management of shelters, and relief item distribution. Coordination among various bodies such as governments, emergency outfits,NGOs and well-wishers must be done effectively to provide timely relief.

4. Recover: This involves rebuilding. Recovery aims to get back to normal. It covers rebuilding infrastructure, livelihoods, providing psychosocial support, and rebuilding. Recovery builds back better by focusing on risk reduction strategies. Besides rebuilding what was lost, it builds back better by incorporating risk reduction strategies to build smarter.
