Senior Citizens in India: Current Status, Data, and More

There are nearly 106 million elderly persons in India; 54 million females and 52 million males aged 60 years or above. According to a report, the number of elderly persons is expected to grow to 170 million by 2025 in India.

To make our readers aware about the current state of senior citizens in India, we are here with recent stats and data on the condition of senior citizens. 

Senior Citizens in India: Status and Data 2021

  • Among all senior citizens, 69% of senior citizens of India live in rural areas and 31% are in urban areas.
  • Over 15 million senior citizens in India are homeless.
  • According to the NRCB, Mumbai has been mentioned as the most unsafe city for elderly citizens in India. 
  • 63% of elderly men and 26% of elderly women were working in rural areas. In urban areas, only 42% of elderly men and about 13% of elderly women were working.

  • According to the 2018 NRCB reports, Ahmedabad contributes to 18.4 % of the total crime against seniors in India –  assault and theft have been the most reported crimes in Ahmedabad so far.
  • The percent of literacy among elderly persons increased from 27% in 1991 to 45% in 2011.
  • In the age group of 60 – 64 years, 75% persons were married while 21% were widowed. Remaining 4% were either never married or divorced.
  • There are around 728 old age homes in India. Almost half of them are free of cost. 

Governmental facilities for senior citizens:

  • Many government and private hospitals provide concessions to the older persons in the treatment of diseases like cardiac problems, diabetes, kidney problems, blood pressure, joint problems and eye problems. 
  • Indian railways give 30% concessions in the ticket prices to all the persons aged 60 years and above. It is 50% for women aged over 60 years. Proof of age is required.
